The most festive season has arrived, which means Johnson City will soon be lit with millions of beautiful holiday lights for the highly anticipated Lights Spectacular! Home to the Pedernales Electric Cooperative, Johnson City will be shining and bustling with events all season, from November 29 to January 5, making it the perfect family destination for the holidays. 

Don’t be fooled by its small town charm – there are so many things to do in Johnson City this holiday season if you know where to look! We’ve got you covered:

Take a walk down history lane

Maximize your day trip to Johnson City by starting bright and early. As you drive into town, you’ll be greeted by the scenic views of the Hill Country, with rolling hills and historic buildings lining the main street. Begin your journey at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which includes the former home of President Lyndon B. Johnson. At the National Park Visitor Center, you can view galleries and watch movies about the Johnson Administration and Ladybird Johnson.

From Pecan Street Brewing

The exploration is sure to build an appetite, so be sure to head to Hill Country Cupboard or Pecan Street Brewing for a satisfying lunch. If you’re looking for lighter fare, the Johnson City Coffee Co. has some great snacks and beverages to fuel you up for the rest of the day.

From Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum

In the afternoon, walk along Main Street and check out the charming stores, art galleries, and murals. Shop for unique finds at the Old Annex Market or souvenirs at the Old Lumber Yard, or pay a visit to the Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum

Along Lady Bird Lane, you will find the Science Mill – a fun family destination housed in a historic grain mill. You can spend hours here, tinkering with the one-of-a-kind science exhibits that inspire curiosity and serve as a space to make unforgettable memories. Access to the movie theater, which plays science movies all day, and both indoor and outdoor exhibits come with general admission.

Lights Spectacular

As the sun goes down, head back to the town square to watch the Johnson City Lights Spectacular unfold. The annual Lights Spectacular is one of the largest holiday light displays in Texas, transforming the town into a twinkling, festive wonderland. Visiting Lights Spectacular, which is free to the public, is like stepping into a holiday movie, where the colorful lights around trees and buildings create a magical atmosphere.

Bring the day to a close with a delicious dinner at any of the local restaurants or bars. Bryans on 290 serves upscale local fare, while Proof & Cooper and Fat Boy Burgers are great options for comfort food and a laid back atmosphere. For drinks and bites, Nice n Easy, Reck ‘Em Right Brewing Company, and 290 Locale are sure to satisfy! 



Lights Spectacular is happening from November 29, 2024 to January 5, 2025. During these weeks, there will be a variety of holiday events going on all over town, from Market Days to tractor hay rides to the highly anticipated parade on Saturday, November 30.

The Science Mill will be at the Memorial Park on December 13 to hold a special STEM activity for the public, so don’t forget to drop by and say hello!
