OUR UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING

A backyard full of wonder and discovery coming soon!

WHY?

The exhibits and programs of the Science Mill have truly created a unique and innovative platform for students to explore the world of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). This Science & Art Park will complete the Mill’s site design and create a one of a kind venue of innovation and creativity with a commitment to introducing and inspiring kids to pursue post-secondary education and become part of a 21st century STEM workforce.

WHAT?

A beautiful new landscape design will create pathways throughout the backyard to five large-scale interactive exhibit areas, each designed as an adventure in science and technology exploration.

  • With the press of a button, watch the rules of physics create amazing designs on a 20-foot tall giant wave pendulum.
  • A 30-foot tall stainless steel arm and hand sculpture will beckon visitors to the Park, where they can control the movement of the fingers and learn the power of levers, pulleys and cables to mimic the human muscle tendon complex.
  • A new area will be devoted to our younger scientists where activities such as a fossil dig will allow them to explore and discover the world of science.
  • The popular Leonardo kinetic sculpture will be redesigned so that visitors can enter into the center of the sculpture and actively interact with the “crazy” Rube Goldberg action of many balls in many paths.
  • A giant tortoise will take residency in a beautiful new habitat. Visitors can peer into its protected habitat and with the aid of an infrared camera, be able to watch it while inside its burrow.

There will also be areas for seating, relaxing and picnics, and a small stage area below the iconic silos that will create a venue for a speaker series and other events to be held in the Park.

WHEN?

Construction on the Science & Art Park began in August! The giant wave pendulum has already been installed and we are in the design and fabrication stages on other exhibits. Please note the Science Mill will be open throughout construction.Check back often, as we’ll be posting pictures of the Park’s progress on this page.
