Snow Day 2025: Frosty Fun Fest

We are SNOW excited for this year’s Snow Day! Join us on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, as we sled into a flurry of fun science activities, including a snow pit with 28 tons of real snow, a mini sled derby, a snowball slingshot, the Fros-TEE Challenge, warm treats, and frosty science demonstrations. Bring your mittens, friends, family, and curiosity for a day full of wintery excitement!

• ACTIVITIES

  • Snow Pit (all day) - Enjoy 28 tons of real snow!

  • NEW! SnowFAKES - While it may not be a winter wonderland in Texas, we can still have snow much fun! Learn how to make fake snow using common household ingredients along with the science behind it in this wintery, hands-on activity.

  • NEW! Snowy Spaghetti Engineering Challenge - Calling all engineers! Straight from the snowy lands of engineering and creativity, we have an imPASTAble challenge for you: build the tallest, strongest tower to support our very own Science Mill Elf! It’s a test of creativity and skill, using only dry spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. Are you ready to accept this pasta-tively amazing challenge?

  • Liquid Nitrogen - Watch as we demonstrate the amazing chemical properties of a super icy substance. See molecular properties revealed and states of matter shift as we expose everyday objects to liquid nitrogen at -321 degrees F!

  • Frosty Bubbles & Vortex Cannon - Guests will explore the science of sublimation and particle physics! Using dry ice and a bubble solution, they’ll observe smoke-filled bubbles rise into the air and burst, releasing sublimated gas. Guests will then discover the physics of vapor particles with our Vortex Cannon demonstration, as our Science Mill educators showcase how toroidal vortices form and explain how even the tiniest particles in the air experience the effects of friction.

  • NEW! Fros-Tee Challenge - Think you’ve got what it takes to conquer the chill? Race against fellow museum guests to unfold and put on an icy, frozen T-shirt as quickly as possible. It’s a chilly challenge…are you up for the frosty fun!

  • Snowball Slingshot - Guests will use a mounted slingshot to launch snowballs to hit hanging hula-hoop targets.

  • Mini Sled Derby - Can you build the fastest derby racer on track AND ice? At this station, guests will be able to design and build a custom mini sled derby to test against others. They will watch as the sled zips down our wooden track that leads to an icy finish.

  • Hot Ice Demo - Step into the world of science magic, where you'll discover the secrets behind supercooling, crystallization, and exothermic chemical reactions! Get ready for a mind-blowing experiment where you’ll create 'hot ice'—a solid that looks just like ice but gives off heat! It's like science and magic colliding right before your eyes. Can you handle the heat?
