Physics of Flight

  • Science Mill 101 South Lady Bird Lane Johnson City, TX, 78636 United States (map)

Scientists have always been fascinated by flight and have spent centuries creating solutions for launching stones, jets, and even humans into the air. From August 31 to September 2, step into the shoes of a physicist by exploring the forces of flight through fun, special activities like building model airplanes, flying discs and gliders, and more!

Whether you're a budding aviation enthusiast or simply curious about how planes soar through the sky, this event is designed to ignite your imagination and deepen your understanding of aerodynamics.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

FAMILY WORKSHOP: Build a Model Airplane - Join us in building Paper Craft Hawk Planes designed by John Brooks, a very close friend of the Science Mill! This workshop will include all the materials needed to build your very own airplane. After we are done, we will head out to the Science Mill backyard to launch our planes and see how far they can fly! Seats are limited for this family workshop event! Workshop admission: $10 per family of 4. Purchase at the door, first come first served

Saturday, Aug 31: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Sunday, Sept 1: 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Monday, Sept 2: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Hot Air Balloon (every hour) - Have you ever wondered how a hot air balloon works? Come and watch as we demonstrate the science behind these flying machines. Guests will learn about the principles of buoyancy, the role of hot air in creating lift, and the complex design of the balloon itself. Join us for this exciting and educational demonstration, perfect for the whole family! Comes with General Admission.

Flying Discs & Straw Gliders (all-day) - Guests will have the opportunity to construct two types of gliders: a straw glider and a flying disc. As they assemble their gliders, guests will learn about the aerodynamics of flight, such as lift, thrust, and drag. Guests will then have the opportunity to test their straw glider outside to see how far it will travel. They can also use their flying disc in the Frisbee Golf Course to see how accurate their throws are. This station is a great way for guests to learn about flight and have some fun at the same time. Comes with General Admission
