Real heroes don’t always wear capes!
Sometimes they wear lab coats, firefighting gear, gardening gloves, or even business casual! But don’t let that fool you – these heroes play a big role in saving, protecting, and improving lives through science, technology, math, and engineering (STEM) ⚛️🔬🌱
This month at the Science Mill is all about our STEM Heroes! Every weekend of August, we will be joined by some incredible men and women from different fields to talk about their profession. There will also be a special hands-on activity so you can get a glimpse of the work they do!
STEM Heroes Series #1: Meet a Robotics Engineer!
Come out to meet our guest speaker, Isaac Newhouse from Neff Power, and learn how to program a robotic arm like the ones used in manufacturing automation.
Then, guests will design, create, and test a "Straw Hand" before exploring the differences in functionality between their real hands and their "Straw Hand." With their "Straw Hand," guests will be challenged to pick up and move different objects using both their real hands and the "Straw Hand." This hands-on activity will show how complex the muscles and tendons are and how they work together to create motion in the human body.
