April Homeschool Day: Earth Day

Earth is our home, and there’s a lot to learn about it! Guests will learn about fault lines, rocks, and water on this Homeschool Day!

ACTIVITIES

Backyard Safari - Identify signs of animal life outside the Science Mill and describe if the habitat provides each animal with sufficient food, water, and shelter for survival.

Rocky Table - At this station, guests will observe and investigate different types of rock samples based on their physical characteristics. They can then use the accompanying iPad and “Rock Identifier” app to learn more about their rock.

LEARNING LABS

(Ages 5-7, 10:30am - 11:00am) Topographic Mapping: Students will learn about topography by creating a topographic map of the Earth using shaving cream and food coloring.

(Ages 8-10, 11:30am - 12:30pm) Water, Water Everywhere: Students will learn about the importance of having potable water and the consequences of drinking unclean water. They will experiment with different materials to design and create a water filtration device that can be used to remove large particles and some chemical contaminants from water.

(Ages 11-17, 1:00pm - 2:00pm) Must Have Water: Students will investigate waterborne diseases and contaminants, recognizing the critical importance of clean water for health and survival. Additionally, they will explore the concept of 'Greywater' and distinguish between gray water and potable water. Students will design a water filtration device capable of removing large particles and certain chemical contaminants from water.

STEM SCHOLAR HOUR

It’s time to showcase your work, STEM Scholars!

Students will have the opportunity to showcase their projects at the museum lobby and discuss it with the guests.
