November 3 Homeschool Day: Careers in Health Science

  • Science Mill 101 South Lady Bird Lane Johnson City, TX, 78636 United States (map)

Homeschool Day

November 3rd and  18th, 2021

Careers in Health Science

“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”

-Mohandas Gandhi

Hands-on Activities: Stations run continuously from 10am-2pm

Microbe Mania

Meet the microbes: you may not have seen one (you’ll need a microscope), but they’re everywhere—even inside our bodies! Get to know them by making your own microbe model and take a closer look at how they function. Explore why scientists study microbes and how they do so safely: disease-causing microbes can mean trouble when they multiply.

Shakedown on Sugar

You’ve probably heard “No sweets before dinner!” But you might be surprised to discover which snacks are actually secret sugar bombs. See if you can predict the sugar content of popular drinks and snacks in this game.

Empowering Emotions

From stomachaches to blushing cheeks, our emotions can affect how our bodies act. The opposite is also true: step into the Silo of McKays to learn how using your motor skills and senses can help your mind feel more calm and clear.

Living Mural

Add your creative touch to a health science-themed object. Each artist’s contribution will become part of our Living Mural in Studio 5. See how it grows and changes at December’s Homeschool Days.

Career Corner

Take home our Career Corner handout, featuring careers in health science, skills that biomedical scientists and healthcare professionals need, and links to cool health science activities and videos online.

Learning Labs:

*Masks are required in Learning Labs*

Kinder-2nd Grade -  Ewwy Gooey Digestion, 10:30-11:15am

Get your hands messy as we turn household items into a working model of the digestive system! We’ll “feed” our contraptions real food to see how bodies break things down step by step.

3rd-5th Grade -  Exercise Engineered, 11:30am-12:30pm

Astronauts need your help! Exercise keeps the body and mind healthy, but it’s hard to do in space. Can you engineer a machine that will allow them to work out in microgravity? Experiment with the math behind resistance exercises as you build your prototype.

6th-12th Grade - Prosthetics Powered 1:00-2:00pm

Think like an engineer to design a prosthetic leg from recycled materials. Ask questions about how bodies move, research human leg bones, and imagine possible solutions, then plan, create, test and improve your prototype.
