Homeschool Day
October 6th and 21st, 2021
Careers in Chemistry
“Chemistry begins in the stars. The stars are the source of the chemical elements, which are the building blocks of matter and the core of our subject.”
-Peter Atkins, Physical Chemist
All young learners are welcome to join Homeschool Days,
including learning pods and those with asynchronous school schedules.
Please note that masks are highly recommended while indoors for all visitors ages 5 and up.
Masks are required during Learning Labs.
Hands-on Activities
Stations run continuously from 10am-2pm
Water Marvels: Challenge a partner to a water drop race! Discover the unique properties of H2O as you try to reunite water droplets.
Molecular Manipulation: What makes a molecule? Experiment with digital and physical modeling tools to construct your own molecules.
Science Of Scent: Uncover the chemistry behind different smells to solve a fragrant mystery.
Living Mural: Receive a chemistry-themed object to creatively customize. Our designer will add your art to the Living Mural; join us at November’s Homeschool Days to see how it turns out!
Career Corner: Take home our Career Corner handout, featuring careers in chemistry, skills that chemists need and links to fun chemistry activities and videos online.
Learning Labs
Kinder-2nd Grade - Water Wonders, 10:30-11:15
Where would we be without water? Get a big-picture view of how water affects life on our planet, then zoom in to explore water’s molecular structure and special properties.
3rd-5th Grade - Reactions to the Rescue, 11:30-12:30
Your mission: design a rescue pod that will keep a reptile egg at just the right temperature. Investigate differences between physical and chemical reactions to find heat-producing combinations.
6th-12th Grade - Heat Up & Cool Down, 1:00-2:00
Let’s turn up the heat to see how extreme temps affect chemical reactions. What happens to molecules as you put them under the stress of heat or cold? Will heat speed up chemical reactions or slow them down?
