Conversation Starters: Knight Anoles

Come meet some special visitors from our friends at Reptilandia Reptile Lagoon on-site through the month of August. Our new friends, the knight anoles, are on a quest to spark your young herpetologist’s curiosity in our BioLab. Come out to meet them, and use these conversation starters to spark discussion with your elementary, middle school or high school student.

Meet Brett Parker, Firefighter/Paramedic and Snake Educator

Brett Parker is a full time Firefighter/Paramedic currently serving in the role of Captain for Canyon Lake Fire/EMS. He also runs a part-time business called Hill Country Snake Removal that he started almost 8 years ago. He not only inspects for, captures, and relocates snakes; what he enjoys the most about his work is teaching people about snakes and their benefit to the environment.

As one of this month’s STEM Heroes, Brett kindly answered a few questions about STEM careers — its relevance to his work, what inspired him, and more.

Conversation Starters: Cell Phone Disco

Have you tried our cell phone disco? When you use a cell phone in the vicinity, you can watch the frequency of electromagnetic waves come to life. It’s fun to watch, and even more rewarding to discuss with kids. We’ve put together a few conversations starters to get a scientific discussion going with children.

Whether you are a parent or a teacher, guiding children through this experience can spark their curiosity about the natural world and inspire a lifelong interest in science. To make the most of your visit, here are some discussion questions tailored for different age groups. These questions are designed to stimulate thought, encourage observation, and promote a deeper understanding of butterflies and their environment.
