Changes in climate over time have made for some wild weather events throughout history. In 2003, grapes were turned into raisins before being picked from the vine during a massive heat wave. With winds up to 150 miles per hour, Hurricane Andrew destroyed a breeding facility for pythons, setting 1000s of specimens loose in Dane County, Florida! Join us as we explore the mechanisms that lead to the weather we experience on a day-to-day basis and the factors that are changing our climate. Make your own mini greenhouse and extreme weather preparedness kit on the museum floor, then head up to the Learning Lab where you can explore wind currents and build your own weather station.
Learning Labs:
SOLD-OUT! K-2 - Wind Currents - 10:30-11:15am: Have you ever had a gust of wind almost knock you over? Learn how wind can be used to move objects. Then learn how meteorologists measure wind speed and direction.
Grades 3-5 - DIY Weather Station - 11:30am-12:30pm: Have you ever wondered how meteorologists predict the weather? Learn about the various instruments and tools used in weather and climate prediction and why it is important for everyone to understand these patterns in our weather.
Grades 6-12 - Micro:bit Weather Station - 1-2pm: Learn how to use Micro:bits to build and design a program to collect weather data. Test your program, then make any changes to correct it.
