STEM Mentorship Hour
STEM Scholars and their families have the opportunity of spending an extra 45 minutes after each Homeschool Day with Science Mill staff, taking deeper dives into the STEM theme of the day along with a variety of STEM principles, STEM careers, and at-home STEM projects. The STEM Mentorship Hour will be divided into 2 semesters.
Fall Semester: September-December, STEM Career Mentorship Hour: Science Mill staff will conduct small, hands-on activities that expose the STEM Scholars to a variety of STEM principles and careers. During the activities, our staff will discuss their STEM background, STEM career pathways, and how your student can develop their own interest in STEM at home. Your STEM Scholar/s can choose to visit one or all of the stations throughout the 45 minutes, taking in as much as interests them.
Spring Semester: January-April, STEM Project Mentorship Hour: Science Mill staff will guide the STEM Scholars in developing an at-home project in an area of STEM that interests them. Science Mill staff will serve as mentors, providing support, ideas, and resources to help students grow their interests and projects. Students will receive a Design Thinking Packet to help them as they work on their project at home between Homeschool Days. The goal is to develop a prototype to solve a STEM problem of their choosing based on what they’ve learned from the previous Homeschool Days. STEM Scholars have the option of coming back every month between January-April or just the months that work with their schedule to discuss and/or show their progress.
The STEM Scholar Program will conclude with a STEM Scholar Showcase in May where students will bring their prototype to Science Mill on the final Homeschool Day to demonstrate their progress and learning. Student prototypes do not have to be 100% complete by the end of May, rather they have the choice of presenting a finished product, the next steps on their project’s journey, or simply a discussion of what they learned as they worked on their prototype.
